What if a woman could return to the beginning and rethink her selections for love and life? When Leslie Headrick, Madison Appleby, and Ellie Abbott first met, these were of their early 20s along with the world lay before them using its infinite possibilities. Since they're planning to turn 40, they reunite for any weekend at a summerhouse in Maine where they share the facts of their lives during days gone by 20 years. Each woman has serious doubts and queries about the path she chose to follow, but none of them ones suspect the startling opportunity they're about being offered to relive those choices and change their futures.
Thought-provoking, entertaining, and downright delightful, Jude Deveraux's The Summerhouse deftly develops the person stories from the three women in fascinating detail while maintaining the general focus around the central tale. The ties of sisterhood and shared experience that bind these resonate with depth and clarity--no wonder then that Deveraux is a perennial favorite with readers. There is certainly little doubt this volume will join her lengthy set of bestsellers. --Lois Faye Dyer --This text refers to an beyond print or unavailable edition of this title.
"If you'd to complete it all over again, what could you do?" is the question Deveraux poses within this wistful novel of second chances. Twenty-five years into her career, with 26 Ny Times bestsellers to her credit and 30 million copies of her books in print, the writer serves in the following situation: 19 years ago, Leslie, Madison and Ellie met while standing in line to get their licenses renewed on the New York City Department of Motor Vehicles. Sharing exactly the same birthday, they became instant friends. Now they're all turning 40, and whilst they haven't seen the other person since that long-ago day, when Ellie invites the rest for the reunion in Maine, they agree to attend. Once there, they realize their lives haven't ended up as planned. But then this trio stumble across Madame Zoya of Futures, Inc., who make sure they are an irresistible offer: they can relive any three weeks from your past, armed with all the knowledge since gained. Afterwards, they need to decide: should they stick using the lives they've got or go with the new futures they've created? The conceit from the DMV meeting and subsequent reunion functions like a clunky device to let the ladies tell their individual tales of woe; the idea that they're soul mates although they only met once rather than saved in touch needs a considerable stretch of the imagination. When they are doing go last time, like 40-years-olds trying to play 20 in a costume party, the conversations are youthfully banal. The eternal allure of lives relived rescues the tale, but this lukewarm effort is strictly for loyal fans. The best thing time travel in Deveraux's world? Instant weight loss. Major ad/promo.

Amazon Best Books from the Month, November 2010: From Laura Hillenbrand, the bestselling author of Seabiscuit, comes Unbroken, the inspiring true story of your man who lived by strategy for a group of catastrophes almost too incredible to be believed. In evocative, immediate descriptions, Hillenbrand unfurls the story of Louie Zamperini--a juvenile delinquent-turned-Olympic runner-turned-Army hero. During a routine search mission on the Pacific, Louie’s plane crashed in the ocean, and what happened to him over the next three years of his life is a story that will help you stay glued towards the pages, eagerly awaiting the following turn within the story and fearing it at the same time. You’ll cheer for the man who somehow maintained his selfhood and humanity despite the monumental degradations he suffered, and you’ll desire to share this book with everyone you know. --Juliet Disparte
The Story of Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Eight years ago, a classic man informed me a story that took my breath away. His name was Louie Zamperini, and through the day I first spoke to him, his almost incomprehensibly dramatic life was my obsession.

It would happen to be a horse--the subject of my first book, Seabiscuit: A United States Legend--who led me to Louie. Because I researched the Depression-era racehorse, I kept coming across stories about Louie, a 1930s track star who endured a wonderful odyssey in World War II. I knew just a little about him then, however i couldn’t shake him from my mind. After I finished Seabiscuit, I tracked Louie down, called him and asked about his life. For the next hour, he'd me transfixed.

Growing up in California inside 1920s, Louie was a hellraiser, stealing everything edible which he could carry, staging elaborate pranks, getting into fistfights, and bedeviling a nearby police. But like a teenager, he emerged together from the greatest runners America had ever seen, competing with the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he put over a sensational performance, crossed paths with Hitler, and stole a German flag right from the Reich Chancellery. He was preparing to the 1940 Olympics, and closing in about the fabled four-minute mile, when The second world war began. Louie joined the Army Air Corps, being a bombardier. Stationed on Oahu, he survived harrowing combat, including an epic air battle that ended when his plane crash-landed, some six hundred holes in their fuselage and half the crew seriously wounded.

On a May afternoon in 1943, Louie became popular over a search mission for the lost plane. Somewhere in the Pacific, the engines on his bomber failed. The plane plummeted to the sea, leaving Louie and two other men stranded on a little raft. Drifting for weeks and 1000s of miles, they endured starvation and desperate thirst, sharks that leapt aboard the raft, looking to drag them off, a machine-gun attack from your Japanese bomber, plus a typhoon with waves some forty feet high. At last, they spotted an island. As they rowed toward it, unbeknownst to them, a Japanese military boat was lurking nearby. Louie’s journey had only just begun.

That first conversation with Louie was obviously a pivot point during my life. Fascinated by his experiences, and the mystery of how a man could overcome so much, I started a seven-year journey through his story. I found it in diaries, letters and unpublished memoirs; within the memories of his family and friends, fellow Olympians, former American airmen and Japanese veterans; in forgotten papers in archives as far-flung as Oslo and Canberra. Along the way, there have been staggering surprises, and Louie’s unlikely, inspiring story came alive for me. It is often a tale of daring, defiance, persistence, ingenuity, and also the ferocious will of a man who refused being broken.

The culmination of my journey is my new book, Unbroken: Some Sort Of War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. I hope you are as spellbound by Louie’s life as I am.
Starred Review. From the 1936 Olympics to WWII Japan's most brutal POW camps, Hillenbrand's heart-wrenching new book is 1000s of miles along with a world away through the racing circuit of her bestselling Seabiscuit. But it's just all the a page-turner, and it is hero, Louie Zamperini, is just as loveable: a disciplined champion racer who ran inside the Berlin Olympics, he's a wit, a prankster, plus a reformed juvenile delinquent who put his thieving skills to good use in the POW camps, In other words, Louie can be a total charmer, a lover of life--whose will to reside is cruelly tested when he becomes an Army Air Corps bombardier in 1941. The young Italian-American from Torrance, Calif., was expected being the first to perform a four-minute mile. After an astonishing but losing race in the 1936 Olympics, Louie was seeking gold inside the 1940 games. But war ended those dreams forever. In May 1943 his B-24 crashed in to the Pacific. After having a record-breaking 47 days adrift over a shark-encircled life raft with his pal and pilot, Russell Allen "Phil" Phillips, we were holding captured by the Japanese. In the "theater of cruelty" that was the Japanese POW camp network, Louie landed in the cruelest theaters of all: Omori and Naoetsu, within the charge of Corp. Mutsuhiro Watanabe, a pathologically brutal sadist (called the Bird by camp inmates) who never killed his victims outright--his pleasure originated from their slow, unending torment. After one beating, as Watanabe left Louie's cell, Louie saw on his face a "soft languor.... It was an expression of sexual rapture." And Louie, regarding his defiant and unbreakable spirit, was Watanabe's victim of choice. By war's end, Louie was near death. When Naoetsu was liberated in mid-August 1945, a depleted Louie's only thought was "I'm free! I'm free! I'm free!" But as Hillenbrand shows, Louie wasn't yet free. Even as, returning stateside, he impulsively married the attractive Cynthia Applewhite and tried to develop a life, Louie remained inside Bird's clutches, haunted in his dreams, drinking to forget, and obsessed with vengeance. In certainly one of several sections where Hillenbrand steps back for a larger view, she writes movingly with the a signifigant amounts of postwar Pacific PTSD sufferers. With no help for his or her confirmed unrecognized illness, Hillenbrand says, "there was no person right approach to peace; each man were required to find his very own path...." The book's final section is the storyplot of how, with Cynthia's help, Louie found his path. It doesn't seem possible to condense the rich, granular detail of Hillenbrand's narrative of the atrocities committed (one man was exhibited naked in a Tokyo zoo to the Japanese to "gawk at his filthy, sore-encrusted body") against American POWs in Japan, and also the courage of Louie and the fellow POWs, who made attempts on Watanabe's life, committed sabotage, and risked their own lives to save others. Hillenbrand's triumph is the actual fact that in telling Louie's story (he's now in the 90s), she tells the stories of thousands whose suffering continues to be mostly forgotten. She restores to your collective memory this tale of heroism, cruelty, life, death, joy, suffering, remorselessness, and redemption. (Nov.) -Reviewed by Sarah F. Gold

Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists in which the U.S. employed to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen "tributes" from each from the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle on the death. in The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing the crooks to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to locate herself more the midst of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her having a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets together with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, as well as a truncated version in the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the world of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, along with a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens like a character. Though initially bewildered by the interest to her, she comes almost to embrace her status because the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more from the story takes place beyond your arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for your next installment.

Reviewers were pleased to report the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book inside the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as effective as the original book Hunger Games or ought to be viewed as somewhat of the "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons towards the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire used to be a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism inside a method in which will enthrall young readers without providing them with (too many) nightmares.

Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen Turner
If there really are merely seven original plots inside the world, it's odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the good guy never is. Yet we've got Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, the House in the Scorpion—and now, following a lengthy tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to your specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world the place where a replacement for your United states of america demands a tribute from each of their territories: two children being used as gladiators in a televised fight on the death.Katniss, from the proven fact that was once Appalachia, offers to consider the host to her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she's entirely dedicated to survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding to one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a whole new Theseus, is cold, calculating whilst still being likable. She gets the attributes to become a winner, where Peeta has got the grace to be a great loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. Their State of Panem—which needs to maintain its tributaries subdued and its particular citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means through which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those that fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the best book with the right time. What happens when we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and our sentences can easily while using same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked before them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that we are no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order to not hate these creatures that are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It's not exactly the contestants who risk the loss of the humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not merely the Games though the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this can be the first book inside a series, not everything is resolved, and what's left unanswered may be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know what she gets given around survive, but not whether or otherwise not the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more.
Megan Whalen Turner could be the author from the Newbery Honor book The Thief and its particular sequels, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. The next book inside series is going to be published by Greenwillow in 2010.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the Usa of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to engage in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation with the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem because the 24 participants are made to eliminate their competitors, literally, effortlessly citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected since the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to adopt her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son with the town baker who seems to have all of the fighting skills of the lump of bread dough, will likely be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who've trained with this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic since they form alliances and friendships inside face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will certainly resonate while using generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' Book certainly one of a planned trilogy.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

A Q&A with J. Carson Black

Question: What was your inspiration for the shadowy conspiratorial organization that your book The Shop is named for?

J. Carson Black: There's for ages been speculation--especially in thrillers--that secretive organizations have existed inside the federal government--that there are black bag operations, often carried in other countries.

Human nature being what it is, it’s easy to me to picture people in power in the highest level planning all types of operations. Power corrupts, and if the resources are available, We have no doubt that something such as The Shop could exist. All it could take will be individuals who are powerful enough to place it in place, and also the operations could go in terms of their imaginations would permit them to go. Throughout history, powerful people are making enormous mistakes, and also have corrupted capacity to their own needs. I'm able to picture the rich and powerful--the individuals who can command just about anything--coming up with all the most hair-brained of schemes--and getting away with it. It’s a little more about human instinct than anything else.

Q: Do you think that it's possible a company like The Shop could really exist?

JCB: I think it can. Recently, it's got arrived at light that the secretive clandestine operations team "JSOC", Joint Special Operations Command, comes with an assassination squad operating with impunity in other countries.

Q: Jolie Burke and Cyril Landry couldn’t be more different to make to get a very unlikely duo. Is it possible to tell us much more about the method that you developed these characters? Do you might have a favorite?

JCB: I love them both. I didn’t be prepared to like Landry, since he’s a killer, but he kind of evolved for me. For one thing, he i both possess a desire for horse racing. When I wrote my way along, he kept showing new facets of himself. He has a wife and daughter. He has a code, although it’s a little relaxed when compared with the ones from normal people. He was trained being a warrior as well as a killer, as people inside the armed services are, that include the skills he is determined by to create a living. Having been a Navy SEAL, he has extraordinary talents and abilities. And that he thinks he could be killing inside the name of his country.

Jolie is my concept of what a homicide cop should be. She’s strong and reasonable, capable and calm. And Jolie has to handle plenty of red tape and departmental b.s. She’s thorough and cares about what she actually is doing. She cares about the young man whose death is with the center of her investigation. The son is gay, and he or she doesn’t want his death to look unremarked. She would like justice for him.
“The Shop is often a hair-raising thriller from begin to finish. With a complicated plot and finely drawn characters, J. Carson Black draws the reader in a world where nothing can be as it seems. This book is both spooky and convincing, precisely what a thriller should be.” ---T. Jefferson Parker, Ny Times bestselling author of The Jaguar

“I’m a big fan of J. Carson Black and The Shop can be a truly original non-stop locomotive ride of a thriller. You won’t even think about putting this book down.” ---John Lescroart, The big apple Times bestselling author of The Hunter

"Fresh and imaginative, J. Carson Black’s THE SHOP can be a riveting read and a compelling tale of character. From FBI agents to local cops, from heroes to villains, The Shop is surely an exciting, sweeping thriller that may linger in your mind for a lengthy time.” ---Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author of It of Spies

"Infused with an original voice and packed with compelling characters, J. Carson Black’s The Shop is a thriller to pay for attention to." ---David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of The Brotherhood with the Rose

Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author in the immortal pangram,* ?The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.? Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens through the encroaching totalitarianism with the island?s Council, which includes banned the usage of certain letters from the alphabet while they fall from your memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. Because letters progressively drop in the statue they also disappear from the novel. The effect is both a hilarious and moving story of a single girl?s fight for freedom of expression, as well like a linguistic tour de force likely to delight word lovers everywhere.
